Art: The Sistine Chapel

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.
- Michelangelo

The work

Michelangelo took four years (working many hours a day, all on his back) to complete the over 200 figures painted on the very large ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. In this section ("The Creation of Adam"), God is shown surrounded by angels, in a heavenly cloak, actively reaching out toward Adam; while Adam, newly created by God, seems barely able (or willing?) to lift his hand.

The all-powerful God loves and seeks after all humanity; we should consider and respond.

If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.
- Michelangelo

The subject

"Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them....

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being."

- Genesis 1:26-27, 2:7 New King James version of the Bible

"Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You."

- Jeremiah 32:17 New King James version of the Bible

Many believe - and I believe - that I have been designated for this work by God. In spite of my old age, I do not want to give it up; I work out of love for God and I put all my hope in Him.
