Ancient Egypt: Hieroglyphs
Drawing is communication
Some of the earliest methods of writing used pictographs and ideograms. These can be beautiful, and it's fun to imagine the meaning, even when you don't understand them.
Of course, without a basis for interpretation, these are little more than pretty pictures. The Rosetta stone provided that basis, with copies of (nearly) the same order in three different scripts.
If an understanding of our language is ever lost, comic books and other visual media would be a powerful tool for future linguists. Have fun making descriptive symbols of your own.
