Other Firsts: First US Spacewalk
"This is the greatest experience," he said. "It's just tremendous."
- Ed White, concluding the first spacewalk by American astronauts
In June 1965, the American space program was catching up to what the Soviet program had accomplished - an important moment in the "space race." During this mission, two astronauts few together in orbit for four days, and made their first exit from the capsule while it was in space.
In this picture, we see Astronaut Edward H. White II[*]Edward White died in a fire during ground testing of the Apollo capsule on January 27, 1967. A tragic loss of three astronauts; but soon the space program would reach their goal of landing on the moon and returning safely to earth. using a "zip gun" - which shot out pressurized oxygen to allow him to maneuver while floating in space. There are two lines connecting him to the capsule: a tether (to keep him from floating away and to pull him back in to the capsule) and an umbilical (for oxygen). The "star" on his helmet is a reflection of the sun from his gold-plated visor (which protected his eyes from the harsh sunlight).
